Loveless Film Difficulty Ranking: 3

If you’ve seen Zvyagintsev’s Leviathan you need to see Loveless. If you haven’t seen Leviathan, what are you waiting for? Loveless is another dark drama from Zvyagintsev of epic proportions. It’s comparable to one of Shakespeare’s dark plays updated for the digital age. Plus, it’s not just a reflection of Russian society, but a reflection of all our lives.

The Breakdown

Loveless starts with snow. It makes the town it falls on seem more serene; the calm before the storm. It’s the end of school for the day and the camera follows 12 year old Alexey as he walks home on his own. He finds a strip of police ‘do not cross’ tape and waves drags it along with him through the snow before throwing it into a leafless tree. Unlike his parents, he’s just a regular kid.

The opening 5 minutes of the film are focused on Alexey, but then the film is hi-jacked by his parents. When Alexey returns home, we find his parents arguing (they’re getting divorced). From their argument, we follow them through a day of each of their lives at work and their affairs for the next 30 minutes of the film. Alexey’s parents are doubly selfish. They steal the film’s narrative from him and also indulge in their own self-interests whilst they have the limelight. They force Alexey out of the film.

You may also notice the abundance of empty spaces and silence in the movie. The director may linger on a shot after the character has left or remain fixed on a character for slightly longer than normal. Zvyagintsev left these visual and audible pauses for us to give us time to think. This allows us to become ‘co-authors’ as we have time to add in our own interpretations. You’ll see that whilst Loveless is a Russian film, the message is relevant to all of us – making it possible to interpret.

Conclusion

Loveless was one of the stand out films for me at the London Film Festival 2017. Just like Leviathan (which you should watch if you haven’t already) it’s storytelling is at the top level. On top of that, the visuals are a perfect compliment – they make the dark bits of the story darker, and offer us breaks to become co-authors.

Man With A Movie Camera Film Difficulty Ranking: 3

Man With A Movie Camera is one of the most influential films from the silent era. Made in 1929 by Dziga Vertov, it uses a range of effects that have been copied throughout the existence of cinema. It was one of the first to employ rapid cutting, split screens, slow motion, and dissolves. It also threw in a load of magic through messing with perspective, using stop motion, and literally having magicians on screen. All the effects come together to create a work imbued with excitement for the potential of modernity to change Russia and the world. This film feels like a celebration of life bottled up in a time capsule from 1920’s urban Russia.

Alexandra Film Difficulty Ranking: 3

Alexandra is a great film to watch for an insight into the Second Chechen War in southern Russia. This is probably a topic that you heard about in the news in the 2000s but didn’t know much about. Through our protagonist Alexandra, we are introduced to both sides fighting the war: the Chechens and the Russians. And, along the way, we also witness the reality of modern warfare, as well as a little bit about Russian family tyranny.

  • Experience life as a soldier
  • Learn about Chechen v. Russian culture (also two different languages)
  • It was nominated for a Cannes Palme D’Or
The Breakdown

Alexandra Nikolaevna hops off of a train on the way to visiting her son, fighting for Russia against the Chechen Republic. A few army officers come and find her and guide her to another train and then onto the top of an armoured vehicle. It isn’t clear what she is doing there, she is obviously out of place. Even the troops seem reluctant to talk to her and help her on her way.

She is ushered to sleep in a tent within the Russian army camp. The next morning she sees a man sleeping in a bed opposite hers. The director, Alexander Sokurov, guides us towards a close up of the man’s sleeping head which tracks down his body from head to toe. Alexandra and the audience both see his war battered body. The camera then focuses on an army jacket, showing the stars on the epaulettes showing his higher ranking. These two camera movements introduce Alexandra’s grandson Denis. From what we are shown, we can tell he is a soldier of a higher rank, and he is young, but already battered by what must be a prolonged war. (A great way of introducing a character without having to say anything).

After waking up, Denis takes his grandma for a tour around the army camp. Unlike other war films which focus on action, Alexandra (and Sokurov) direct our attention to the banalities of war. Sokurov shows us a line of men cleaning their guns, zooming in to show us the details. Denis then takes Alexandra into an armoured vehicle. Inside, Alexandra comments on the horrible smell and focuses on the wires, pumps, and empty drivers seat. In Alexandra, we see the guns and armoured vehicles but we don’t see them in action. This is the reality of war, prolonged periods of waiting.

Conclusion

Alexandra is our unbiased insight into the Second Chechen War. She gets everyone at the camp talking, from the lowly privates to the unit commander. Then, right when you think we are only going to hear from the Russian side of the story, she goes wandering into a nearby Chechen town and has a chat with an old Chechen woman. In a way that only an old woman could, she shows us life on the front line and gets soldiers to talk to us.

The Pencil

The Pencil is bleak. It features an artist that travels to a remote Russian town over 1,000 miles from Moscow to be closer to her partner who’s been wrongly imprisoned there. She becomes a teacher who believes she can make a difference, but has to confront a violent bully.

The teacher is a naive ‘Im going to make a difference’ teacher. She’s the Russian version of Edward James Olmos in Stand and Deliver and Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting. However, unlike the two American films, her class bully is from the criminal family that runs the town. A family that has the police department, prison, school, and any other public services in their pocket. The bully is free to extort and bully both his fellow students and teachers.

Unfortunately for her, her naive beliefs that the bad kid would take to her first art lesson are misguided (she’s obviously never taught before). She doesn’t exactly try to help him either when she says he has no talent in front of the class in their first lesson. From there, her relationship with the bully spirals downhill until the naive hope she had disappears.

The Pencil is shot well. You get a real sense of setting – the isolation from everywhere else (you never see a way out), the juxtaposition of the freedom of nature with the oppressive factories spewing smoke non stop and big run down apartment blocks, and the grey colour palette which is brought to life briefly by the teacher on their art walks.

Secondly, pay attention to the pencils in the film as the film exploits them well. There’s the local factories that create them manned by the working class locals whose kids are being taught to use them to create. Using them instead of creating them gives the kids a way out of the town. It’s also a symbol of the naive teacher’s wish to offer her students a way out, which is easily snapped by the bully in the very first lesson. It’s also no coincidence that the ending features the wood logs that are used to make pencils.

The Pencil is a clever bleak film. However, the bleakness doesn’t present the best picture of Russia. It presents a society without hope that is scared of standing up to the corrupt powers in control. If you can handle hopelessness, it is worth a watch.

P.S. To all the audience members generalising Russian (and Eastern European) film as bleak, please watch more movies before making assumptions. There’s plenty of comedies out there, and plenty of bleak American films that present a bleak picture of the U.S. too.

Here’s another opportunity for you to see a way of life hidden in a remote part of Russia. Again, Loznitsa’s short-documentary is available to watch on YouTube. So you have no excuses for avoiding 20 minutes of immersion into an intriguing mental asylum.

The Breakdown

The film opens with a picture of a forest covered in a thick layer of mist. You can hear the wind blowing and a bird crowing. The forest cuts to a hut in blurred vision which obscures the face of a figure that repeatedly walks to the front of the house to shake a white bed sheet. A lightning strike hits and another human silhouette appears against the whitewashed front of the small mental asylum.

Loznitsa documents a handful of scenes from life in the mental asylum. We witness the residents helping out with harvesting the grain fields and feeding a cow that is left to roam the grounds. One particularly memorable shot shows two men standing at the forefront of the frame whilst a man sits behind them playing an accordion. While a cow meanders around the shot, the taller man nicks the shorter one’s hat and puts it on his head. The shorter man quickly grabs it back before they both carry on staring.

The whole 20 minute film uses blurred vision. Whilst it makes it hard to watch, it does respect the mental asylum residents. Their identity and their location are kept hidden, allowing them to continue life in their isolated existence. In addition, the human sounds, possibly sounds of pain, are kept quiet to respect their lives.

Conclusion

Loznitsa’s Letter is a another short and serene documentary. His experimental techniques make it harder to watch than Factory and Portrait, but it is equally intriguing. Loznitsa’s short documentaries are opportunities to immerse yourself in ways of life that you are probably unaware of. Enlighten yourself and watch them all on YouTube.
