Persona Film Difficulty Ranking: 4

Do you want to be a film connoisseur? Well you can’t be if you haven’t watched Persona. The film has been for film critics what climbing Everest is for mountaineers, it’s the peak of the film world.

Here’s a peek at the opening 5 minutes to weird you out before you read on.

Why Watch this Film?
  • If you want to see something mysterious. If Christopher Nolan’s Memento is level 1 mysterious film and David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive is level 2, Persona is level 3.
  • To move on from the early (and also brilliant) Bergman films such as Wild Strawberries – this time it’s less philosophy and more experimental
  • For some shocking and hilarious images – I’ll explain below!
  • To see the beautiful black and white cinematography – this film really stands the test of time (it could have been made yesterday)!
The Breakdown

Bergman disorientates us in the introduction to Persona. There’s a lot of noise as a small light slowly brightens. It’s a gas stove lighting in slow mo. As your concentrating on the slow-mo Bergman chucks in a still picture of a penis like a subliminal message – did you notice it in the clip above? From that point I knew this film would be unique.

I was not wrong. This film is an experience. The disorientating introduction continues with a bunch of shocking imagery such as a tarantula walking across the camera and a clip of someone hammering a nail into their hand.

Why does Bergman try and disorientate us? He disorientates us to disrupt our viewing pattern. He doesn’t want us to watch this relaxed, he wants us to be active viewers and to work hard trying to interpret the film. After the unsettling intro we are introduced to two women: a film star that doesn’t talk and a young nurse.

The nurse takes the film star to the country for treatment. Sounds normal, but it becomes quite the opposite. Alone in the countryside their characters start to merge. Are the two characters one? If so is the nurse fantasizing about being a nurse or is the film star examining her own psyche? Either way this film is a must watch!

Conclusion

What a film! If you love films that leave you dumbfounded or lost in thought Persona was made for you! It has been one of the most debated films in film history alongside Citizen Kane and has inspired the works of David Lynch among many others. If you want to consider yourself a film buff, you have to watch it!

Colour of Pomegranates is not a biography of the 18th Century Armenian poet Sayat Nova, but a film which tries to depict his poetry on film. If you’re looking for plot, storyline, and a conclusion, stay away from this movie. However, if you want to explore how you can use film as an artistic medium, check out this brilliantly esoteric and stylish film.

Illumination Film Difficulty Ranking: 4

If you love film and philosophy, Illumination might be the film for you. It’s like watching an existential essay: you’ll follow the main character as he stumbles through life trying to find meaning. It’s experimental and brilliant. Watch the film here (Buy on Amazon).

Why Watch Illumination?
  • You love philosophy (bonus points if you love existential philosophy)
  • Or if you love science (some parts are not for the squeamish)
  • Or if you don’t know what to do with your life and want to watch someone else who struggles to find meaning in theirs
  • It’s experimental – the editing will remind you of Bergman’s Persona (if you haven’t seen Persona watch it now)
The Breakdown

“What is illumination? Illumination is a term and concept of Augustine. We obtain knowledge by an enlightenment of the mind.”

The film starts by musing what the meaning of illumination is. Then it cuts to a half naked man taking a medical check. The camera cuts from a close up of his hand to a close up of his foot. Then someone asks the male subject for his name, his surname, his place of birth, height, and weight. In this opening, Zanussi (the director) reduces Franciszek to his physical being before we’ve had a chance to get to know him. This raw physical being is the starting point of this philosophical film essay.

After we meet Franciszek the film flashes to ‘reality’. You’ll see footage of the moon landing, and troops marching ready for war. These images quickly provide us with context. From them we can assume that the film is set in the late 1960s/early 1970s during the Cold War between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. These cuts of footage are also included to disrupt the rhythm of the film. Zanussi includes a lot of interjections like this in his film to intentionally jumble up the story. His intention is to show us the mess of images we see during our lifetimes and to make it difficult to follow the film, to reflect the struggle to find meaning in life.

Conclusion and What to Watch Next

There is a story-line in Illumination (the story of Franciszek) but it is hard to follow. Zanussi only uses Franciszek’s life as a framework for the film’s progression. Franciszek’s struggle to find enlightenment is the framework for the film’s commentary on the world’s struggle to find meaning in life. (Warning: you may be filled with existential angst/dread when watching this film).

First up, you need to watch Ingmar Bergman’s Persona if you haven’t already. It’s one of the best explorations of the human psyche (and at a level above David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive).

For more from Zanussi, I strongly recommend watching The Structure of Crystal before this one. It’s easier to watch and is one of those films that makes you feel at peace with life and death (a bit like Wild Strawberries).

The Breakdown

Once upon a time… Mysterious Object at Noon starts with the famous four letter opening. It marks the fine division between non-fiction and fiction that the film will follow. The camera starts at the front of a vehicle driving along a highway in the Thai capital, Bangkok. Whilst Thai music blares through the radio, the driver takes an exit and within a few turns is in what could be the country. We hear a voice on the loudspeaker:

“Fish sauce for your curry…Tuna fish is coming…steamed of salted”

The camera then cuts to a woman sitting in the back of the fish sales truck and the director starts interviewing her. We learn that her father sold her to her Aunt and Uncle for the price of a bus fare! She never went home again. The shots of the lady telling the story are cut with shots of election posters with men in smart suits. Is Apichatpong implying this hardship was the fault of the government?

After she tells her story, Apichatpong asks the lady if she has any other stories to tell us, true or fake. This question sets up the game of Exquisite Corpse that Apichatpong plays for the rest of the film. He travels around the country asking the next person or group of people he meets to add a few more lines to the story he starts with. We hear parts added from kids at a school, from a theatre production, an old woman, and more. In this regard it is a celebration of the creative process, and the imagination of people. However, the myth/story they create is a mess. As put by one lady:

“My story is not really connected. I just made it up in an instant”

Conclusion

Once you realise that Apichatpong is playing a game of Exquisite Corpse the film gains meaning. It is a puzzle of stories from across the country. It is also a puzzle of images collected from his tour of Thailand, introducing us to a country that isn’t obvious from the guide books. Film needs innovators like Apichatpong to show others what is possible with this artistic medium. Film also needs viewers open to innovation, so go watch this!
